When I was little, I loved to hear about magical and mystical stories. I always hoped they were true!
One story I always enjoyed was the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I wanted this to be real more than anything. I’d see a rainbow and ride my bike towards it, trying to find the end with the pot of gold.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed every time.
Until recently…
The other day there was a massive storm that came through our area. It was heavy, but brief.
After it had blown through, there was a light misting rain gently coming down. My wife looked out the window and said, “Come check this out! The end of the rainbow is in our yard!”
Even though I tried hard as a child, I was never able to get to the actual end of the rainbow. It always seemed elusive and too distant. Also, I had to find it. This meant I had to go out and work.
During this special day, it found me in my own yard without me having to work at finding it. The end of the rainbow just showed up in my front yard. 
I’d be lying to you if I said that I didn’t go out and look at the end in hopes that maybe there was a pot of gold at the end. Even as an adult, I still had some deep hope that the end of the rainbow had a pot of gold.
The magic of the rainbow was still in my heart.
To me, this is the most interesting part about rainbows. They are still magical today.
Furthermore, rainbows actually have something better than a pot of gold at the end. After Noah’s story of the flood in the Bible, God put a rainbow in the sky as a sign and promise that he would never destroy the earth again with a flood.
The rainbow is actually a symbol of God’s faithfulness and mercy.
The real “gold“
As a child, I really just wanted the pot of gold. I imagined these detailed dreams of what I could do and have with the wealth. I would dream about all the material stuff that I could buy.
As an adult, I know that this pot of gold would be fun. But I also know it would eventually run out.
And then, I’d merely be left with material things that likely would lack any substance. Essentially, there would be a stopping point to the fun things I could buy.
Today, I’m more interested in God’s faithfulness and mercy.
This never ends. It’s abundant, timeless, and ever-lasting. God’s faithfulness and mercy is so much better than gold that can only buy material things on earth.
The real lesson in seeing the rainbow in my front yard is that God is speaking to us and showing us things all the time. The magical part of the rainbow is God’s blessings for us. This is Him speaking to us. This is Him reminding us of Him.
Next time you see a rainbow, remember the promise God made to Noah and to us, a promise that shows us He is always with us!

@Jeremy—love this, man. A solid and lovely reminder that God is always speaking to us. For most of my life, I mistakenly assumed that he speaks often to others, but rarely to me. But now I’m realizing more and more that the more I practice listening, the more I hear/see him speaking to me.
Listening well seems to comes easy for some, and more naturally challenging for others (like me). But it’s a simple practice and skill worth learning for sure, and I wish I’d have uncovered it before my 40s. 🙂

This also happened to my family, August 1968.. It had been a quick storm with a tornado in it. But like with you, there was a light rain afterwards with the sun shining through.
I had left the windows open, My husband and I grabbed our five little ones and ran for the cellar. I think part of the tornado hit our house because of the noise upstairs. It took out a large tree nearby.
The rainbow was a blessing and a sign from the Lord. Our furniture was only knocked over and we still had windows to look out of when the rainbow visited our yard. The house was miraculously intact. Thanks to God that we were all safe. It was a very touching moment. We had our five little “pots of gold” safely with us.
I agree that when we practice listening we see more of his glory. In the last 3 years i have suffered great loss 1 being my daddy, 1 being the loss of my newborn grandbaby, and last walking in on a friend who had shot himself cuz he couldnt take the pain in his life anymore and didnt have a relationship with GOD to pray for healing. God has walked with me through it all making my heavy heart a bit lighter and he does it through rainbows and so many other ways. The last rainbow i saw was also right in my front yard. It was amazing. I am daily shedding the old to become new again. Hes been with me all along and now its my turn to give praise for all he is in my life. Thank you for sharing. I love this.
